Narrative
A family is invited to spend a weekend in a lonely country house
But as the weekend goes by, they realize that the family who invited them has a dark side. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share the elements of their characters that they found most fascinating and complement each other as they discuss their different approaches to the profession. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, the director of the original Danish film Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on holiday with his wife in Tuscany. Although the Dutch were a bit awkward with people, both couples got along very well, and upon returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to come to the Netherlands. He thought about it for a moment, but decided that it would feel strange to be around people he didn’t really know; his story for the film came about as he let loose his darkest fantasies about what might have happened if he had said yes (though he maintains that the original Dutch couple never gave off any bad vibes). In this remake, the nationalities of the two families have been changed to American and British. When he washes his eyes in the bathroom, he has a subconjunctival hemorrhage in his left eye, in the next scene his eyes are completely clear.

No pun intended: if you’ve seen the European original (which is not even 2 years old yet) you might understand what I’m trying to say. Looking at it, it probably makes sense that you haven’t – you might think! However, as you watch it (and it seems to stay true to the original for the most part), this movie seems to be trying to “fix” things that some people didn’t like about the original… the son is one of those things… Illness can be hard to deal with… your situation is making you lose your passion… or it could make you lose it.
Same goes for James McAvoy
Not here – and it takes the movie to the next level. he really is the heart of the movie. His performance is subtle and magnificent at the same time. I don’t remember every little thing about the original and I don’t want to insult the original actors… so let’s just say he’s great here. The acting and writing work great overall, with a few twists thrown in… even though the changes might not seem that consequential at first…
for different reasons!
but in the end (literally) we get something different… for better or worse! I like it: 1) because it’s different from the original and 2) because it fits the movie and the characters it has to offer better! I was skeptical, but this is as good as the original… Don’t Throw Stones at Me… The final season of What We Do in the Shadows is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
