There’s a scene where the characters discuss their favorite Christmas movies
Narrative
Helen begins a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. In the spotlight, when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer enlists Sam to protect him. None of them mention the wildly popular Christmas movie Love, Actually.
Perhaps that’s because it stars Keira Knightley
Graham Norton and guests: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024). Spies, London, Keira, Ben, quality cinematography, a great soundtrack – what could go wrong? Plus, I already know this is my favorite genre, and I’m going to overlook any potential flaws.
I was wrong
But when the dialogue in episode 1 was slow, some moments dragged on too long, and scenes with Quinten’s attempt at dialogue left me empty, I tried to console myself. Of course, they only enhance the characters and set a unique tone. As the episodes went on, I realized that this series was not going to make it.
Not just unrelated, but also minor and all the characters that I really cared about
Honestly, I don’t know how the magic happens, but I was drawn to the stories and characters from Slow Horses, The Americans, Le Bureau, The Diplomat, and even The Old Man, despite all their flaws. Add to that the lack of stakes and the many omissions of key details, and you get the annoying: the intrigue ratio has become too high to be enjoyable. Yes, all the basic spies are here in Black Doves, but somehow the recipe lacked salt and by E03 I was already increasing the refresh rate.
I’m so sad for what could have been
There’s no need to waste time endlessly scrolling through the entire lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.
